If you are like most people you probably don’t know that much about mouth wash. As a child you are taught to brush and floss but mouthwash is often overlooked. Mouthwash is typically used to kill bacteria and they are able to reduce plaque. It is important to kill bacteria because if you have too much bacteria it creates plaque and the plaque can cause inflammation. Gingivitis is a form of gum disease that happens when plaque builds up on the teeth and gums and causes inflammation of the soft tissues. Plaque produces toxins that irritate the gums and start to eat away at them. This can cause the gums to bleed or become red and swollen. If left untreated the plaque and inflammation can destroy your tissues and eventually lead to toothless and other oral issues.
